Mobile Transportation Data Collection Platform

Technology

Technology

This invention focuses on a platform which enables collection of several types of traffic and transportation system data using multiple data collection units which are portable, affordable and integrated with communication capabilities that allow for connection to centralized traffic management centers. The architecture of the platform allows for automatic data collection and logging in a centralized data repository with minimal or no need for human intervention. Multiple data collection sensors or units can use the platform to communicate in real-time with the traffic management center allowing actions to be taken quickly on the data being gathered. The data collection and communication capabilities are designed to allow easy installation on different devices for portability and access. The Connected Vehicle Reference Implementation Architecture (CVRIA) that forms the basis for the platform has multiple applications embedded within it to facilitate functions around collection, dissemination and taking action on data gathered. Developed applications related to environmental, mobility, safety and support are able to collect data and send them to associated systems for processing and analysis before disseminating the results in a prioritized manner so that the requisite action can be performed.

Potential Application

The value and importance of managing road networks is gaining increased attention by local, state and national transportation agencies. This increased awareness of collecting road data and tying it to other aspects such as weather and traffic has resulted in a number of new and different initiatives between public and private sectors in the transportation arena. This invention further improves and innovates on connected road monitoring and communication devices and systems by developing a novel integrated communications and data collection/dissemination platform. The proposed platform seeks to enhance data collection at different locations while optimizing resource utilization via the use of mobile/portable data collection units and improving overall cost-effectiveness.

Opportunity

The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) market size is expected to reach USD 66.5B by 2024. ITS infrastructure seeks to reduce road accidents, improve traffic flow and increase safety. ITS is also integrating with connected car technology to transform mobility and safety on the highways through the deployment of advanced traffic sensors and systems. Rowan University is looking for a partner for further development and commercialization of this technology through a license.
